Lana Condor Is Trapped in a Cave with an ‘Aggressive’ Bull Shark in Exclusive “Devil’s Mouth” Clip

The ‘To All The Boys’ star panics as her Thai vacation turns deadly in a PEOPLE-exclusive preview of the new horror flick

What would you do if you were trapped with an angry shark?

In The Devil’s Mouth, a group of friends played by Lana Condor, Kathryn Newton, Nico Hiraga and Tommi Rose have to answer this exact question. A clip from the new Prime Video horror-thriller shared exclusively with PEOPLE shows the exact moment the characters realize that their Thailand vacation has become a survival mission.

In the clip, the friends find themselves stranded on a rock in the titular cave, holding on for their lives as a shark circles in the water around them. James (played by 28-year-old Booksmart star Hiraga) is first to realize that the shark is a breed considered to be dangerous toward humans.

“Bull shark. It has to be. That’s what I was saying,” Hiraga’s character tells his friends as the fish orbits the rock island they have taken refuge on. “They can do fresh and salt water and they’re aggressive as hell.”

“They bash their prey with their head. They go after you and after you,” he adds of the shark breed. “It’s like it’s stuck in this maze and it’s territorial…”

As James reveals just how severe the group’s situation is, his girlfriend Max (Condor, 29) looks at the bull shark with a terrified expression, and Sara (Newton, also 29) clings tightly to a rocky pillar. Meanwhile, a blood-splattered Adrienne (Rose, 25) laughs hysterically, seemingly in shock.

“It’s like a cartoon. Like a guy wearing a fin hat on his head,” Adrienne says of the circling fish. “Oh my god, Greg,” she continues, referring to her on-screen boyfriend portrayed by The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s Gavin Casalegno. “He calls his mom every night.”

“I don’t understand how this happened, OK,” a similarly panicked Max then tells her best friend Sara. “This wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Like the PEOPLE-exclusive clip, most of The Devil’s Mouth — which also stars White Lotus breakout star Tayme Thapthimthong as a cautious cave guide — takes place in the water. While filming the Jeff Wadlow-directed nail-biter last year, Condor says she “would just run to the towels” at the end of each day.

“It was really intense. It was physically intense, emotionally intense. It was exhausting,” the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before star tells PEOPLE of filming. “You’re in the water 12 to 13 hours a day, swimming for your life in real life — not just in movie land. In between takes, you’re still treading for your life.”

“What I will say is every day when I finished, I was so excited to see a towel. I would just run to the towels. … And then I would be so dry and be like, ‘Finally,’ ” Condor recalls. “Then I would get home and I would realize that I’m an adult and I have to bathe myself at the end of the day, and I would be like, ‘Oh my God, I have to go back into the water, into the shower again.’ It was very difficult.”

To cope with the long hours in water — and other intense aspects of filming, like shooting her on-screen fights with real-life friend Newton — Condor says she “did a lot of self-soothing.”

“Some days it was meditation,” she adds, while “some days it was finishing the day with a nice bottle of red wine.”

In his own chat with PEOPLE, Casalegno, 26, echoes, “Obviously there were the days we were in the water for 14 hours and we’re all like, ‘Yo, we’re going to bed.’ But someone was always doing something.” “It was always fun,” the actor adds of the experience. “There was never a dull moment.”
