The cause of death for a 45-year-old missing man whose body was found in Shelby, Wis., has been determined.
The body of Stanley Howe was discovered on April 27, a week after he was reported missing when his vehicle was discovered at Paul E. Stry Nature Preserve in La Crosse, Wis., with his phone and personal belongings inside, PEOPLE previously reported.
Howe’s death was ruled a suicide, Bayli Mason, Chief Deputy Medical Examiner of the La Crosse County Medical Examiner, told PEOPLE.
Howe was a resident of La Crosse, CBS affiliate WKBT, the Vernon Reporter and NBC affiliate WEAU previously reported.

The search for Howe required several days of cooperation among agencies, the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Office said in an alert at the time.
