Loudoun County Sheriff's Office\" title=\"Eric Bieniemy and wife Mia; Elijah Zion Bieniemy\" \/><figcaption><i>Eric, Mia and Elijah Bieniemy<br \/>Credit: Scott Winters\/Icon Sportswire via Getty; Loudoun County Sheriff&#8217;s Office<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>NEED TO KNOW<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Elijah Bieniemy reportedly placed a phone call to police two days before he allegedly shot his mother, Mia Bieniemy<\/li>\n<li>The son of Mia and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Elijah was later arrested<\/li>\n<li>Eric Bieniemy has been by his wife\u2019s side in Virginia since the July 26 shooting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Elijah Bieniemy placed a phone call to police two days before he allegedly shot his mother, Mia Bieniemy, according to a report.<\/p>\n<p>Elijah, the 27-year-old son of Mia and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, called police to report that his parents had hidden weapons that belonged to him, <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7494889\/2026\/08\/05\/bieniemy-shooting-guns-home-police-phone-calls-records\/\" data-type=\"\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Athletic reported<\/a> on Wednesday, Aug. 5.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Loudoun County Sheriff\u2019s Office report obtained by The Athletic, Elijah told police in a call on July 24 that \u201chis parents are withholding his weapons and that he\u2019s a certified UFC fighter so now he feels like he cannot defend himself.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Bieniemys\u2019 eldest son also reportedly told authorities that his parents \u201crefuse to give [him] his firearms back when he tries to go to the range to use them,\u201d and that \u201chis parents told him he must give them his firearms if he wants to keep living in the home \u2014 and that he could have them back when he needed them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/people.com\/thmb\/bMGun7vTWDjorBhMzh3RrL06MkM=\/fit-in\/1280x960\/Eric-Bieniemy-Kansas-City-Chiefs-073026-tout-e22d1028bfe046bfb58776b51f72557a.jpg\" alt=\"Eric BieniemyCredit: Jamie Squire\/Getty\" title=\"Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy walks toward the practice field during Kansas City Chiefs training camp at Missouri Western State University on July 25, 2026 in St Joseph, Missouri.\" \/><figcaption><i>Eric Bieniemy<br \/>Credit: Jamie Squire\/Getty<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Police classified the call as urgent (priority 3) but not life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p>In June, an incident report showed that a caller alerted authorities to check on Elijah\u2019s welfare at the home after one of his counselors at a remote college where he was enrolled was \u201cconcerned for his welfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Follow your favorite athletes on and off the field with <\/strong><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/people-sports-newsletter-signup-11947275\" data-type=\"\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>PEOPLE\u2019s free sports newsletter<\/strong><\/a><strong> \u2014 sign up now!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Eric and Mia Bieniemy live at the Ashburn, Va. home, which is close to the training facility of the Washington Commanders, with whom the coach served as offensive coordinator in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Mia Bieniemy is continuing to recover from her injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Mia, 57, was shot in the left forearm and shoulder with a .22 caliber firearm on Sunday, July 26 at her home, <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GMA\/status\/2082425205264200068?\" data-type=\"\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">according to a criminal complaint<\/a> obtained by ABC News.<\/p>\n<p>Elijah was arrested and charged with three felonies \u2014 use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding and discharging a firearm within a building \u2014 in the shooting, according to Loudoun County court documents obtained by PEOPLE.<\/p>\n<p>Elijah is awaiting a mental health competency evaluation.
