A thousand of them. Men and women from all over the world, packed shoulder-to-shoulder like they\u2019ve been poured into this place, surrounded by what feels like almost as many red tents.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Too many to count at first glance. Identical. Clean. The red is too bright. Too intentional. The color of a warning. One you can touch. As soon as they\u2019d arrived at the field, they\u2019d all been given a number. A guard snapped a thin black wristband onto each of them. \u201cFor safety,\u201d he said. It didn\u2019t feel like safety.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There are armed guards, dressed in black, carrying what look to be military-style rifles, ringing the \ufb01eld \u2014 disciplined, ready. Not quite aiming. Not quite relaxed, either. There\u2019s no shouting, no barking orders. They don\u2019t look like men who expect trouble. They look like men who\u2019ve already been told what trouble will look like, and exactly how fast it ends.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p><em>No one knows what\u2019s inside the tents. And why the guards?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Since arriving here in Ohio the day before, in a place somewhere between Cleveland and Cincinnati, somewhere that refuses to resolve into a real place on any map, no one has been allowed inside the tents or even been allowed to get close to them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The letter promised no cameras. The lenses above the tents disagreed \u2014 quiet, mounted high, watching everything. And once Hannah Wagner notices them, she can\u2019t stop noticing the way the lenses seem to tilt. They\u2019d also signed paperwork \u2014 stacks of it, clipped tight, meant to overwhelm. The title page called it a humanitarian resilience assessment. Nobody smiled at that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This diverse collection of people of all ages has been flown here from their various countries, not knowing anything about what will be in store for them except what Jimmy described in his invitation letter. They know nothing about the games. Or where they\u2019ll play out. For now, they\u2019re all milling around trying to understand what the numbers they\u2019ve been given signify. A thousand nervous patterns in one tight space. People whisper in different languages.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Some pray. Some pace. Some stand too still.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wyatt Jordan wonders why there is a need for armed guards in this field.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAre those men there to protect us?\u201d Hannah Wagner asks him. She\u2019s standing beside Alek \u2014 tall, Eastern European, calm in a way that feels practiced. Wyatt can\u2019t tell if Alek is brave or just tired of being afraid.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBut from who?\u201d he says. \u201cOr maybe a better question is \u2014 from what?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There is a man standing directly in front of him, one who\u2019s only introduced himself as Jack, a hard-looking man with a southern drawl, tattoos on arms that look like the ink was burned into him along with his tan.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Jack follows Wyatt\u2019s gaze to the rifles. Doesn\u2019t flinch. He turns to Wyatt and says, \u201cPossible they\u2019re worried they might have to protect us from each other.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wyatt almost laughs\u2014 then doesn\u2019t. The MrBeast he\u2019s grown up watching on screen is standing right here in front of him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou know who I am?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Jimmy\u2019s grin softens. \u201cI do. I know some of you. Names, faces. And I\u2019ve been given the basics on the rest. I know you too, Jack. And Alek, I appreciate you choosing to be here despite your circumstances.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThank you,\u201d Alek says.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSo wait&#8230; what&#8230;\u201d Wyatt stammers. \u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Jimmy glances out at the tents, at the guards, at the cameras that absolutely weren\u2019t supposed to be here. For a heartbeat, he looks serious.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWell, let\u2019s see,\u201d Jimmy says, choosing his words. \u201cSince they asked me to be the one to invite you,\u201d he says, \u201cI kind of felt like I should show up for the first day of orientation and say hi.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOrientation,\u201d Alek says with a dry edge.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt does feel like the first day of school,\u201d Jimmy says.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOr boot camp,\u201d Jack says. He doesn\u2019t bother hiding the suspicion. \u201cYou gonna explain what\u2019s actually happening?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNot everything,\u201d Jimmy shrugs. \u201cI\u2019m happy to tell you what I\u2019ve been told, but obviously I don\u2019t know what I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHow about some highlights?\u201d Alek asks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Jimmy nods once. \u201cI tried to give you those in the letter I sent to all of you. Without trying to sound like some philosopher \u2014 which, believe me, I\u2019m not \u2014 I really am convinced that if this competition plays out the way I hope it will, this can be the first day of better days. For a lot of people who don\u2019t usually get better days. I wouldn\u2019t have put my name on it if I didn\u2019t think it mattered.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wyatt knows a lot about Jimmy. Wyatt watches him and thinks, <\/em>He looks young enough to be in the crowd.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou really believe someone my age can be the leader you described?\u201d Wyatt asks. \u201cOr Alek. Or Hannah.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDon\u2019t sell yourself short,\u201d Jimmy says enthusiastically. \u201cI\u2019m not all that much older than some of you. There\u2019s no age limit to being someone who tries to do the right thing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wyatt hears the words and feels his stomach tighten. \u201cNot sure about my leadership capabilities, not gonna lie,\u201d he says.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s no accident you\u2019re here. The same goes for Jack. The way Hannah Wagner is.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSo this is all your idea?\u201d Rupert asks, eyes fixed on Jimmy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI was asked to come up with a concept, amp up some challenges, look for some specific dynamics,\u201d Jimmy says. \u201cBy people with a big vision for a better future. A better world. That reeled me in.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSomething else you said in the letter,\u201d Alek says. \u201cYou told us to trust you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI meant it. I mean it even more now that I\u2019m meeting you guys,\u201d Jimmy says. \u201cI\u2019m not going to pretend I can control everything here. But I can promise you this: I\u2019m going to do what I can to keep it honest.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThen what\u2019s with the cameras?\u201d Alek asks. \u201cIn your letter, you said\u2014\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNothing goes public. No live-stream. No uploads. They\u2019re for internal monitoring only \u2014 security. It\u2019s important everyone is safe. At least, that\u2019s the line I was sold.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Jack notices. \u201cWell, that\u2019s not the most comforting.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo be brutally honest, I just asked about them too,\u201d Jimmy replies thoughtfully. \u201cThey were a surprise to me.
