I demanded my wife take me to the hospital, because that\u2019s how bad it was. I couldn\u2019t stand it anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Larkin initially tested negative for Lyme disease, a year-long antibody study led by Dr. Luis Marcos confirmed that he had the extremely rare Bourbon virus infection.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/people.com\/thmb\/_iGxOFmsTC7lLfMRUEUe7MiniNY=\/fit-in\/1280x960\/hospital-bed-remote-121124-1-9e155b82a2d04b63b6fdb6f0184a84b8.jpg\" alt=\"Hospital bed (stock)Credit: Getty\" title=\"Hospital bed remote control hanging on the bed rail. \" \/><figcaption><i>Hospital bed (stock)<br \/>Credit: Getty<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bourbon is a rare virus that is believed to be spread by infected ticks, per the <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bourbon-virus\/about\/index.html\" data-type=\"\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a>.
