At the same time, she also announced that she underwent surgery for basal cell carcinoma \u2014 a form of <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/celebs-who-have-shared-skin-cancer-struggles-11975360\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"null\">skin cancer<\/a> \u2014 on her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am deeply grateful to my children, my family, my friends, my caregivers, and the medical professionals who have helped me through this,\u201d Simon wrote in her statement. \u201cTheir love and patience have carried me through days when my own reserves were not enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simon welcomed her first child, daughter Sally, in 1974 with then-husband <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/james-taylor-8704177\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"null\">James Taylor<\/a>, whom she married two years prior in 1972. They expanded their family with their son, Ben, who was born in 1977. In their family\u2019s Consenses.org interview, Sally called her mom the \u201cqueen of guidance\u201d and said she got her \u201cvulnerability and openness\u201d from Simon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has always been my girlfriend when it came to advice on guys and men and how to handle love. Because she\u2019s written more poetry on the subject than anyone,\u201d Sally added.<\/p>\n<p>Sally started writing songs as a teen, even though she didn\u2019t follow in the family business until she was 20 years old after a near-death experience. She went on to release two others \u2014 <em>Apt. #6S<\/em> in 2000 and <em>Shotgun<\/em> in 2001 \u2014 and toured for several years.<\/p>\n<p>After retiring from touring in 2003, Sally married husband Dean Bragonier, she told <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralintelligence.com\/10_questions_for_sally_taylor\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rural Intelligence<\/a>. She gave birth to their son, Bodhi, in October 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Sally went on to teach music at Berklee College of Music and founded her organization, <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/consenses.org\/about\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow\">Consenses<\/a>, in 2012, which aims to make education more accessible to all. Inspired by her family\u2019s dyslexia diagnoses, the method behind Consenses mimics a game of Telephone, using art passed between creatives instead of words for communication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t believe nobody had thought of it sooner?!\u201d she <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/sallytaylor.com\/consenses\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote on her website<\/a> of dreaming up the idea. \u201cA way to bring all the arts, in their many forms, together under one roof and in the process to show how necessary and helpful our differences can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Sally has paid tribute to her famous parents. Growing up, Ben and Sally weren\u2019t that close \u2014 until one crucial incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[They] fought terribly. Since Sally is three years older than Ben, she always bossed him around \u2014 until one day he fought back,\u201d Simon told PEOPLE in October 2007. \u201cHe actually slapped her on the back, and they both ended up crying. For the first time he felt empathy for her, and she realized they were equals. They\u2019ve been close ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like his older sister, Ben didn\u2019t officially begin performing until his 20s, when he could no longer deny that his musical heritage was calling to him.
