Taylor was later pronounced dead.<\/p>\n<p>After <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/hours-after-saying-wedding-groom-kills-groomsman-suv-11955128\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"null\">pleading no contest<\/a> last month, Shirah received a sentence of 30 to 45 years in prison on Monday, May 11, according to <a class=\"null\" href=\"http:\/\/case-search\/court\/C07\/case-details?caseId=2025-0000051988-FC&amp;tenantKey=C07-25-0626170-00-00&amp;searchUrl=%2Fcourt%2FC07%2Fsearch%3FlastName%3DShirah%26page%3D1&amp;_\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow\">court records<\/a>. He&#8217;s also required to pay $334 in fines and court costs. Shirah received credit for 618 days already spent in jail, which will be deducted from his sentence.<\/p>\n<p>He was sentenced to 30 to 45 years for second-degree murder, reduced from open murder, and 10 to 15 years each for failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death and driving on a suspended, revoked or denied license. The sentences will run concurrently, local media outlet <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/flint\/2026\/05\/i-will-forever-be-sorry-groom-sentenced-to-30-years-for-killing-best-man-on-wedding-night.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"null\">MLive<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Shirah&#8217;s bride, 23-year-old Collier, pleaded guilty to one count of accessory after the fact last month. Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc12.com\/news\/crime\/groom-sentenced-to-30-years-in-prison-for-killing-groomsman-in-flint\/article_4b3e8a7b-4cde-417b-9dbf-840988ca9e61.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow\">ABC12 News<\/a>, she may seek a sentence under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act on May 26. That was my best friend &#8230; I accept full responsibility for my actions that night.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the outlet, Shirah told the court he didn&#8217;t mean to kill Taylor, his longtime friend. Judge Hanible told him, &#8220;I believe that you are not a criminal. You are, however, a killer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/people.com\/thmb\/i5hn2JfwUcnFywAUOW1Fk3wve_c=\/fit-in\/1280x960\/James-Shirah-and-Savanah-Nicole-Collier-mugshots-042126-7901f7d473344321be8e56d9a8042298.jpg\" alt=\"James Shirah; Savanah Collier mugshotsCredit: Flint Police Department\" title=\"James Shirah and  Savanah Nicole Collier mugshots.\" \/><figcaption><i>James Shirah; Savanah Collier mugshots<br \/>Credit: Flint Police Department<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shirah&#8217;s attorney, Harrell Milhouse, claimed it was an accident. &#8220;There was a fight, an argument, with alcohol involved,\u201d he said, via <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.courttv.com\/news\/i-will-forever-be-sorry-tearful-defendant-sentenced-for-killing-best-man-on-wedding-night\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"null\">Court TV<\/a>. &#8220;This is a situation where you have friends \u2014 lifelong friends, best friends \u2014 and things get out of control.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PEOPLE reached out to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton for comment on the sentencing but did not immediately hear back.<\/p>\n<p>According to testimony, Shirah had been drinking throughout the day and left his argument with Taylor for about a minute before returning and allegedly hitting him. The crash sent Taylor flying through the air, MLive reported.<\/p>\n<p>Per ABC12 News, Collier was also accused of failing to cooperate with authorities during the investigation into the crash.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage?
