The apology comes one day after a new report revealed the flight crews were taking selfies and filming themselves before the incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sincerely apologize to the public for the concern caused by the accident that occurred in 2021,\u201d an air force spokesperson said during a press briefing on Thursday, April 23, per Reuters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A report released on Wednesday from the government&#8217;s Board of Audit and Inspection, reviewed by <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/22\/world\/asia\/south-korean-fighter-jets-photos-phones.html\" data-type=\"\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>, <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/International\/wireStory\/2021-collision-south-korean-warplanes-caused-pilots-taking-132305655\" data-type=\"\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Reuters<\/a> and <a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/International\/wireStory\/2021-collision-south-korean-warplanes-caused-pilots-taking-132305655\" data-type=\"\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">ABC News<\/a>, details the actions taken by the pilots before the costly December 2021 incident. The board said during a pre-mission briefing, he told his colleagues he planned on taking photos to commemorate the milestone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While returning to his base after the training mission, the wingman suddenly banked his jet because two fellow pilots on the lead aircraft were trying to film him with their phones. The maneuver was made without consultation and brought the airplanes dangerously close together.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both pilots reportedly tried to avoid the collision, but it wasn&#8217;t enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lead pilot&#8217;s wings clipped the wingman&#8217;s tail. Following the collision, both aircraft landed safely on the ground, but the damage was already done to the planes.
