Sofia Goggia of Italy rounded out the podium in third place.<\/p>\n<p>Team USA just missed a bronze medal in the men\u2019s snowboarding big air final on Feb. 7, when Ollie Martin came in fourth place.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Johnson\u2019s win was slightly bittersweet, as her teammate <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/lindsey-vonn-horrifically-crashes-2026-winter-olympic-final-11902251\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Lindsey Vonn crashed in devastating fashion<\/a> just minutes after Johnson\u2019s own race. Christophe Pallot\/Agence Zoom\/Getty\" title=\"Breezy Johnson of Team United States in action during the Women's Downhill on day two of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics at Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre on February 8, 2026 in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.\" \/><figcaption><i>Breezy Johnson in action during the women&#8217;s downhill on February 8, 2026 in Cortina d&#8217;Ampezzo, Italy. <\/i>\n<p>Christophe Pallot\/Agence Zoom\/Getty<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Americans Jackie Wiles and Bella Wright also competed, coming in fourth<strong> <\/strong>and 21st, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>For Johnson, the medal is the cherry on top of a hard-earned road to Olympic glory; she previously competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics but finished seventh in the women\u2019s downhilll, and sat out at Beijing in 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/beijing-olympics-breezy-johnson-pulls-out-after-knee-injury\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">due to injury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Because the athlete clocked her winning time early in the competition, she was shown throughout the day watching her competitors race, and at one point, was seen wiping away tears.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel good and ready for the downhill tomorrow. I hope I haven&#8217;t peaked yet,&#8221; she said at a press conference prior to the race. &#8220;This is probably as healthy as I&#8217;ve been since I got injured before the last Olympics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Johnson won her first world title in women\u2019s downhill last year at the 2025 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Before Vonn&#8217;s crash, Johnson said she was one of few people who could understand what the star was going through, as she once competed with the same injury.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/people.com\/thmb\/Qhat_lMUFMypSglWKuWzvAlkYLo=\/fit-in\/1280x960\/GettyImages-2259961518-69f26aa8775040428af5f6add6831ab7.jpg\" alt=\"Breezy Johnson reacts in the finish area of the women's downhill event at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Feb. 8 in Cortina. She was eventually airlifted away, as per protocol, and was taken to a hospital in Innsbruck, Austria.<\/p>\n<p>The determined Vonn posted an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUd2wMxDXhw\/?hl=en\" class=\"pseudoStyle\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">emotional statement<\/a> to her Instagram just before the race, saying she believed in herself and had come out of retirement simply because she loved the sport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will race tomorrow in my final Olympic Downhill and while I can\u2019t guarantee a good result, I can guarantee I will give it everything I have,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But no matter what happens, I have already won.&#8221;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Johnson&#8217;s win came during the same event where her teammate Lindsey Vonn crashed just 13 seconds into her race US&#8217; Breezy Johnson reacts in the finish area after competing in the women&#8217;s downhill event during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games at the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre in Cortina d&#8217;Ampezzo on February 8, 2026.
